Doing what you love to do and doing it with the greatest commitment to excellence are certainly the keys to success in whatever you’re doing. I say this with utmost conviction because of a particular experience I had in the course of my career as an author and publisher of books and educational materials.
When I began to write and publish books, I discovered that I also needed to go from school to school introducing my books to them and asking them to read the samples and make up their mind whether to put them in their list of recommended books. I had sent my first two novels to the print media and some book reviewers had written amazingly positive reviews about them in various national dailies. I had even successfully inserted extracts of the reviews in my books and had securely kept copies of the newspaper publications in my archive for future reference and as undeniable evidence. However, I knew that the way to sell the books was to take them to the people who needed to use them. I also knew that people’s willingness to buy the books depended squarely on the value they would find in them.
At first, as I went from place to place creating awareness for the books, it was not rosy because there was a process to be followed. People had to be convinced before they approved of my books. But after a number of schools had given express approval to the books, I began to feel good as an author.
Looking back to those days – those days of “little beginning” – so to say, I remember a particular moment that remains unforgettable in my mind. This experience is unforgettable because of the way it raised my confidence in my ability to achieve success with books in spite of the general perception that people don’t read books in our society. I paid a follow-up visit to a school that had recommended my books to their students. It was almost a month after schools had resumed, so the visit was also a subtle way to see if I could be paid for the ones earlier supplied. When I went into the proprietress’ office, I was paid shortly after we had exchanged pleasantries. But that was not the moment I am talking about.
Having thanked her, I stood up to leave, and she politely requested me to accompany her to a particular class that was eager to see me in person. She disclosed to me that she had earlier promised to invite me to visit their class. I was surprised to hear that. “What is special about the author of a little storybook?” I thought.
When we walked into the class, the woman said some pleasant things about the book and introduced me in the most edifying way I had ever heard. The children gave me the loudest applause I had ever received from people. As I spoke briefly to them, I felt fulfilled. I saw great love and excitement in their eyes which provided the greatest evidence that they really enjoyed reading the book that I had authored.
From that day, I made up my mind to keep doing what I love to do and to keep doing it with the greatest commitment to excellence. Somewhere along the line, the fulfillment will come, even at unexpected moments.
